My name is Theo Voorbij (which is pronounced “4BYE”). I live in the Netherlands, a very small country in Europe. I am married and we have two great kids.

When I was at secondary school I bought my first SLR camera, a Praktica MTL 3. Using mainly black and white film because of the expense, I learned how to use the basic settings. Nowadays with all kinds of automatic settings, most people don't know what they are doing. In 90% it doesn't matter because most light conditions are good enough to have decent shots. And most people need a memento and don’t really care about the best quality. But I'm glad I know at least what ISO, aperture, depth of field and shutter speeds will accomplice. Nowadays I use Canon gear with some really good lenses like the Canon EF 70-200mm 4.0L, 24-70mm 2.8L II, 85mm 1.8, 16-35mm 4.0L IS and 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II.

When I started my business in the eighties I didn’t had much time to do photography anymore. In 1991 we went to the USA for the first time and I was hooked right away to those beautiful parks and nature, where you could get lost and don’t see to many people if you don’t want to. That’s where I picked up my photography again. First I took shots like most people do to show people what to expect in the States. And to be honest that’s the way it still goes most of the time. But in recent years I am trying to go back at certain locations at a better time or better circumstances. But when travelling around you have to deal with the situation as it is most of the time. However that doesn’t mean you can't make your odds better! For instance, we get up early and wait for the last lights until the sun goes down. Those hours give us to most satisfactory shots most of the time. Another advantage is that we also encounter a lot of wildlife during those hours. Wildlife is also a reason that we like the USA so much. We live in a very small and crowded country with more than 16 million people about the size of twice Hawaii. So for us it’s a great experience to walk or drive for hours without seeing other people or houses. It’s a great way to relax and to take home those memories with the pictures we take. We like the South-West especially because of the large variety of (national) parks within small distances.
